Hard Disk Defragmentation Warning
Posted : 21 Dec 2002
Currently, I do not recommend that you optimise or defragment your hard disks regularly. Every now and then (maybe once or twice a year) perhaps. Strange things tend to happen to Macs if you do this too often or incorrectly. OS X file storage is also completely different to OS 9 storage and fragmentation (unless severe) tends to have little or no effect on performance. I regard this as a potentially risky operation that should be used with caution and only after backing up your invaluable data. This is after several repair & recovery sessions I have had to perform after using optismisation software this year and other warnings I have read from reputable technicians throughout the world.
Pls ensure that your hard disk is always (at a minimum) no more than 90% full. As a rough rule never less than a gigabyte of free space. if you have a small hard drive - maybe time to upgrade !
